Packing guide
How to pack an instrument
Instruments are built to take vibration in the panel, not drops in a parcel hub. A few minutes of careful packing protects the gyro bearings, pressure diaphragms and cover glass.
Every instrument
- Use a sturdy box with at least 2 inches of foam or bubble wrap on every side. Skip packing peanuts: they shift, and the instrument settles to the bottom.
- Pack it face up, with the cover glass and knobs wrapped.
- Sending more than one? Keep the instruments from touching.
- Ship with tracking, and insure the package for the instrument's value.
- Put a copy of your service request in the box.
Gyro instruments
- Let the gyro spin down completely before you remove it. It can keep spinning for several minutes after the power is off.
- Cap the air fittings on vacuum instruments.
- Double-box it: pack the wrapped gyro in a small box, then cushion that box inside a larger one.
- Mark the box fragile. Gyros should be handled like eggs.
Pressure instruments
- Cap the pitot and static fittings, and don't blow into them.
- Use caps or plugs on the fittings rather than tape, which can leave adhesive inside.
- Note what failed in your request, such as a missed 24-month check or a reading off field elevation.
